Race for the Iris - Difficult
- Angkor Wat -
The training grounds in the mansion are gone, inventory handling has been changed and Lara has a few new moves. I'll also miss the old Butler. If you're an old Tomb Raider hand, this training level may become tedious as you suffer though Von Croy's instructions. However, the repartee between him and the precocious sixteen-year old Lara is well done and worth your attention.
If you're new to Tomb Raider, the level is invaluable instruction. Either way, you must complete the training to enter the main game.
In gameplay the second half of the training is split into two parts. The game gives the player an easy Race for the Iris if all 8 Golden skulls are not found. Von Croy gives you no help finding the skulls. For an expert he sure is inattentive, and he cheats, as you discover later. The hard Race to the Iris is presented if you found all the secrets in Angkor Wat, namely the Golden Skulls. This walkthrough will not detail the easy Race for the Iris. Let's get started.
1. Approach Von Croy and listen to his first instructions. Before following him go around the left side of the steps, on the ledge, and just in front of another smaller set of steps going up, get Secret #1, a golden skull. It may be difficult to see. All secrets in the training level are these skulls. In the main game they're equipment, ammo or other useful items.
2. Follow Von Croy to a circular panel on the wall. Wait while he disarms a spike trap then follow him to the first jump. Before you make the jump, walk down the steps on either side of the walkway and wade through the water to get Secret #2. Go back up and make the jump.
3. You find Von Croy at the top of the next incline where he's chasing a wild pig. Since you're not armed, just stay out of the way until he deals with it, then follow him to the next two jumps, near a waterfall.
4. After the second jump, hang and drop to the floor below. Walk in Von Croy's direction, he's above on a walkway, make the first right and go under the walkway. Get Secret #3.
5. The ledges are too high to climb, so head west to the end of the area and go up the ramp. Make the two jumps again and catch up with Von Croy. He's going to teach Lara to shimmy. Hah! That brings some images to mind.
6. Do the shimmy and keep following. Do the hang and drop as instructed. Some of the changes in the camera angle while Lara's maneuvering can be disconcerting. Get used to it. There are a lot between here and the Final Confrontation. Move ahead.
7. Dive in the water and swim directly under the falls and get Secret #4. To the right, behind the falls, is an underwater entrance. Swim through. At the end get a large and a small med kit then return to the pool. If you get short of air, you can surface about halfway through the tunnel.
8. Swim to a low ledge across the pool from Von Croy. Climb up and find the lever and push it. Lara is finicky and must be positioned exactly right before she'll perform.
9. Von Croy passed you unnoticed when the bridge lowered, so continue east and find him examining another round panel. Follow him through the door he opens and climb the ladder as instructed.
10. Push another lever at the top, the hang from the edge of the ledge and climb the ladder down. Go left from the ladder, up some stairs and do the monkey swing across the vines. When you're safely across, drop down, or Lara will do it automatically when she runs out of vines.
11. Follow Von Croy and exit the building into a courtyard. If you dawdled and are far enough behind, a wild pig will await you in the courtyard. Run into the courtyard and turn right. With the pig in tow, keep running toward the other end of the courtyard. The pig is faster so you might have to do some dodging. Find Von Croy standing in a doorway. When he sees the pig, he'll deal with it.
12. Before following Von Croy through the door, turn right and walk around the edge of the wall. After a few corners you can find Secret #5. Now let's go find Mr. Personality.
13. Go through the door and down a long flight of steps. You emerge into a sunlit courtyard where there's a door flanked by two statues. Go through into the chamber beyond. Go right of the huge column that stands in the center of the walkway, and to the right of the next column find Secret #6.
14. Continue and walk around the spikes. Be careful. You don't have to bump into them to get damage. Just coming fairly close seems to cause grief. Outside, Von Croy is ready with another assignment.
15. Crawl into the tunnel and take the first left. At the end you find Secret #7. Return to the main tunnel and continue until the cut scene runs. Now we know where Lara got her backpack - pretty much on the cheap, and not, as I had suspected, from Abercrombie and Fitch.
16. Push the lever that rolls the stone. Crawl back out to Von Croy.
17. In the next passage you have to sprint and jump to get past some traps that puff darts from the walls. Do a running forward roll to get under the lowering slab at the end. If you miss simply duck and crawl under. The slab never lowers to the ground.
18. Here the paths split. Since you're using the walkthrough and will have all 8 secrets, you will be rewarded by being presented with the difficult path. I will not describe the easy path here, or the easy path for the Race for the Iris. If you wish to play it, simply save your game here, skip picking up the 8th secret and continue through to the end of the Iris level. Then restore the game at this point, pick up the 8th secret and continue.
19. Go up the slope towards Mr. VonC. Instead of following him up the steps to the left, go right and follow the walkway to Secret #8, then follow Von Croy.
20. He will tell you about two paths to follow. If you got all 8 secrets, and we did, you'll follow one path, if not, you'll follow the other. Follow him into the next room. After his spiel you will have to get to the ledge above the door and use the lever.
21. If you follow Von Croy he will eventually walk to the east side of the room, stand and look at a ledge. It's a clue. Climb the ledge, turn left and go to the wall. Jump/grab and crawl into the low tunnel. I found doing the keystrokes for this maneuver very unhandy. If you do, remember, you can always reprogram the keys.
22. Follow the tunnel to the end and up a ramp. Turn right and follow the walkway around to a ledge facing the center of the room. A rope hangs from the ceiling.
23. Now you get to use one of Lara's new moves. You have to run/jump/grab the rope. Once on the rope use the sprint key to get the rope swinging. You'll probably have to play with it awhile to get the hang of it. Anyway, when the swing is taking you over the opposite ledge, release the rope and drop to the ledge. If you miss, the fall is not fatal, but it takes about half your health points, so save your game here. If you were on the easy path, the large square section of floor below would be full of water.
24. Once on the other ledge push the lever. Go back and do the rope trick to get back to the other side, go down the ramp, climb and hang from the low tunnel, drop to the floor and rejoin Von Croy.
25. He stops at the entrance to a dark tunnel. Even though he's beckoning to you, he doesn't want to talk so don't fool around trying to get Lara into position to start another instructional cut scene. Just walk down the tunnel and leave him. You slide into the next level.
- Race for the Iris - Difficult -
1. This is a race between you and Von Croy. There is an advantage to getting and staying ahead of him. If you don't he'll shut several doors and sabotage some bridges to hinder you. However, since you're doing this while reading the walkthrough, it's unlikely you'll ever get the upper hand. About the only way to do it is to save here, do the race, restore and do it again after you've viewed the territory.
2. After Von Croy gives his little speech about the desire to win, he takes off on the count of "two". Man, this guy reminds me a lot of my Grandfather. If you can't win by physical strength, use "stealth".
3. Run through the door after Von Croy and follow the corridor to a narrow room. Do a standing jump over the first stake pit and a running jump over the second.
4. Sprint down a short hallway and do a running/jump/grab across the next huge pit. If you miss and fall to the ground below, use the vines as a ladder to get to the top.
5. Run right into the next room and turn left when you enter the corridor. Follow the path to a bridge. If you walk across the bridge is collapses and dumps you into a stake pit. At the far end of the bridge is an incline that slopes down into a second stake pit. Past that pit is another, with a downward sloping ledge, before the doorway. Run across the bridge and when you start sliding into the first pit, jump. You should land on the sloping edge of the second. Jump immediately and land in front of the door. Whew!
6. Follow the passage to a pile of black rubble. A cut scene here will probably show you Von Croy performing a dirty trick - cutting a rope bridge.
7. Stay on the right side of the passage and jump over the rubble. Immediately turn right into a doorway and follow the passage. If you'd beaten Von Croy you could just run across the bridge here. But since we're humoring the old man and allowing him to think he's our better, dive into the water and swim through the passage into the next room.
8. Climb out of the water and head through the doorway to the west. Follow the corridor and do a run/jump/grab over the next two stake pits. Do a left and you come to a pit with a rope. There's another bridge here to which Werner has given the chop.
9. Run/jump/grab the rope and swing across. If you slide down to the end of the rope it will increase the pendulum effect and getting the swing going will be easier. Why didn't I think of that earlier in Angkor Wat?
10. Climb the ledge and turn left. You soon come to a huge chasm with wild pigs at the bottom. There's a gated door on the right you could have gone through if you'd beaten Von Croy. The gap's too far to jump. Hang/drop from the edge to the ledge below. Turn and face the area. There are vines around the left corner of the central ledge. Dodge the pigs, run there and climb the vines to the top.
11. Walk through the mouth of the huge head and jump to the floor. Follow the twisting corridor up and out to Von Croy. Watch the tragedy unfold and get ready to start the real game.
